After two full days spent on trains, we arrived in Yangon Christmas Eve. There wasn’t much we felt we needed to see here, aside from a visit to the massive Shwedagon Pagoda, so the main reason we visited at all is because we had a cheap flight back to Bangkok on AirAsia. It was interesting spending Christmas Day here, as it really didn’t feel like Christmas at all. We only spent two nights and one full day here, mostly walking around and relaxing. As such, we’ve decided to simply post some of our favorite pictures and comments here for your enjoyment.
One recommendation we will make for anyone planning a visit to Yangon is to have a meal at Feel Restaurant. This place has many tourists, but also many locals that enjoy trying to pick from their selection of over 50 dishes. Their ice cream was also very good.
Enjoy the pictures!
A glimpse of the past; a roadside telephone booth. This will soon be extinct thanks to cellphones quickly taking over.
Bicycle and oranges. Genius way to sell goods.
Yangon had many roadside “restaurants”.
We walked through a mile long strip of vendors selling produce and goods.
I love how Santa is wearing sandals. One of a few signs that it was Christmas day.
Most of the apartment buildings in Yangon looked like they could really use a coat of paint
Selling coats on the road. P.S. It was 90 degrees!
Very common sights all over Myanmar. This man is rolling and selling betel nuts for the masses to chew. It rots their teeth, turns them red and can cause mouth cancer, but they don’t seem to mind…
Glimpse of the colonial era from the reign of the British empire.
View of the city at sunset from the Sky Bistro Restaurant at the top of Sukara Tower in downtown Yangon. Notice the massive, gold Shwedagon Pagoda.
We had dinner at Feel Restaurant. It served traditional Burmese food. You go up to the counter to pick what you want to eat.
Meeting some new friends at Feel.
Shwedagon Pagoda
Gold and status were everywhere!
Annalisa surrounded by school girls wanting her photo. This was the first time during our Myanmar travels she was asked to pose.
Annalisa loves Elephants…
…and Aurelien LOVES ringing the bell at pagodas.
