Introduction to the Big Island of Hawaii

Big-Island-Beach

Over the past three winters, Annalisa and I have had the good fortune to be able to ditch the Iowa winter and spend four to eight weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii. Thanks to my ability to work online and a great house-sitting situation, we’ve had a chance to experience practically the entire island; from the gorgeous Western beaches, to the lush Northeastern rain forests, to the mountain lava fields.

A few facts about the Big Island:

  • It is the largest Hawaiian island, and is consistently confused with Oahu (the island where Honolulu is located)
  • It has the two active volcanoes. One of them, Mauna Loa, is the largest volcano in the world.
  • Kona and Hilo are the largest cities, but still feel like small towns.
  • If you want to see the whole island, you’ll drive through many different terrain and climate zones, passing through green jungles bursting with plants, black (hard) volcanic lava, dry grass, the ocean, cows, rainbows, resorts, beautiful hills and mountains, black sand beaches and more.

We love the Big Island and want others to get the most out of their experiences here, so we’re putting together a series of posts highlighting what we’ve enjoyed seeing, doing, eating, and touching (Sea-turtles! Although technically they touched us).

We’ll also talk about ways to minimize the cost of your trip. While we don’t have any advice on how to find a free place to stay, we will share our tips for saving money on traveling to the Big Island, accommodations, car rentals (which we think are a must while you visit), activities, and food.

We will visit there in a couple of weeks. The car rental is not cheap since it is about $340 for 5 nights/6 days. Thanks.
